OMMAC 3 'Only The Brave' FIGHT REVIEW
Posted on Tue 1st Dec, 2009 .
OMMAC continues to provide top class domestic cards despite only being three shows in and the action on display this past weekend was, at times, world class. The calibre of fighter emerging from Liverpool is a testament to the many great gyms there and promoter Chris Zorba delivers with international fighters, bringing in Brazilians, Icelanders and Swedes.

At the top of the bill, Paul 'Boom Boom' Cahoon shook off the cobwebs with a gruelling decision victory over Pancrase Gym Sweden's Matti Makela. Both men appeared cast from iron, having success with their own shots but showing the tenacity and durability to keep pressing forward after eating heavy leather from their adversary.

Cahoon showed that he is more than a one-dimensional striker, using his wrestling skills to garner takedowns and administer ground and pound to mix it up and throwing heavy shots on the feet. Makela was impressive on the feet but the granite-chinned Cahoon didn't flinch when the Swede wrapped his shin around his head. Most other men would have fallen from the powerful shots landed but these two slugged it out for the duration and the decision was returned unanimously for Cahoon, who intends to drop to 170lbs where it seems almost impossible for anyone to faze him with strikes.

Former professional boxer Tony Moran came in with a reputation as a KO artist whilst Shaun Lomas was the durable warrior that takes on all comers. In a clash reminiscent of old-school style vs. style bouts, Moran landed with his fists and veteran Thai fighter Lomas connected with big leg kicks and knees. Outsized, Lomas showed heart to recover from heavy shots. His overhand right landed many times and his leg kicks helped to hinder Moran's movement. It was the boxer initiating takedowns and, although Lomas' takedown defence left a lot to be desired, the Wolfslair fighter was unable to get off many effective shots or submission attempts. Moran slowed and Lomas kept up the pace to earn himself the nod from the judges with a gutsy performance.

It was later revealed that Moran had broken his ribs in the first after a heavy knee from the thai boxer. Carrying on for a further two rounds in that condition is highly commendable and, if the circumstances were different, Moran could have taken the decision in a very close fight.

The world welterweight title was on the line as Arni Issakson of Iceland took on Luis 'Bessuoro' Dutre Jr. of Brazil.

In a bout that that wouldn't have looked out of place on a UFC card, both men displayed well rounded skills sets and good striking; the bout mostly playing out on the feet.

Issakson was relentless, pressing forward with hooks and sickening body shots that clearly affected Dutre Jr. throughout the course of the bout. However, Dutre Jr. countered well, scoring with uppercuts and knees. Issakson's granite chin kept him in it and the second round saw him land a heavy left hand, following his opponent to the mat and getting very close to finishing it with strikes.

Fighting out of Kaobon for the encounter, Dutre Jr. showed his versatility over all ranges and in a razor-thin decision, he was awarded the win on the scorecards. Should you get a chance to watch this encounter, don't miss it. A classic battle.

There were good submissions wins for McKay, McGuinness and Newman when they came up against tough competition in Chadwick, Harrison and Wilkinson respectively.

Undefeated prospects Dave Hill and Jay Gladden struggled to get matched up on the card and eventually found opponents to step up to the plate. Outmatched though, the two continued their upwards trajectory with submission wins.

Richie Ryder, Jay Manning, Chris Oban and Mick Solomon all also secured submissions wins.

Ihiekwe, Opie and Menga all got wins on the semi-pro undercard.
